Community Oral History Project
History is more than just dates and documents; it’s the voices of the people who lived it. The Community Oral History Project is our effort to capture and preserve the personal stories of our neighbors, elders, and friends. By sitting down and recording these conversations, we are building a living library of our region's heritage, ensuring that the experiences, wisdom, and memories of our community are passed down, in our own words, to future generations.
Generation to Generation: Passing down family history, traditions and stories
Some of our most valuable treasures aren't things we buy, but the stories told on front porches and the recipes taught in family kitchens. Generation-to-Generation is dedicated to bridging the gap between elders and youth. Through this initiative, we provide the tools and inspiration needed to ensure that family histories, cherished traditions, and the lessons of the past are actively preserved and passed down to the leaders of tomorrow.
Legacy of Liberty
SEKYAAMCC assumes the goal of preserving the history and stories - the legacy - of Liberty School, built for African American students in 1936. The Legacy of Liberty is linked to its predecessor, Higgins High School, built with Rosenwald funds in 1928 on land donated by an African American preacher, George Higgins, in Vicco, Kentucky.
History Speaks from the Grave
Cemeteries hold history and untold stories. With our History Speaks from the Grave Project, we try to resurrect these stories and history by documenting headstones and researching those buried in the cemetery. History still speaks, even from the grave.

Stories Behind the Quilt
There is a generation that held quilt-making sacred, as more than just a creation out of necessity. Passing this knowledge down to the next generation is a needful exchange. As quiltmakers gathered around the table in a communal environment, oftentimes conversations would be laced with history: family history and local history despite racial and ethnic differences. Stories Behind the Quilt has become a vehicle that creates space to share local history and traditions.
